Oasis in City Beach

The front verge of this City Beach property is brimming with hardy, water-wise endemic plants and Green Horizons award winning Australian native garden design (2016 Best Waterwise Front Garden, Town of Cambridge, Waterwise Awards).

From the main living spaces of this home, your eyes sweep across the colourful flora and out to the ocean. The native planting scheme has been designed to provide a sustainable, low maintenance, water conscious front verge. Primarily, it comprises of perennial Kangaroo Paws, for vibrant colour, and Native Grass Trees, creating height and interest.

We are spoilt to have an on-going and open design brief for this property – we love to let our creativity take the reigns as the garden grows and evolves! The latest touch is a customised letterbox, bedded on reclaimed Jarrah sleepers and edged with corten steel.

Why choose Australian Natives?

The soil in City Beach is generally nutrient poor and because of it’s proximity to the ocean, high in salt (both typical soil properties across our region). We chose native plants as they are typically more resilient than other plants, they’re accustomed to drought like conditions, harsh soil and low maintenance. To give them a helping hand, we spent additional time preparing the soil before planting and have a regular re-mulching program.

Wander to the back of this property and you will step into a sheltered, lush, coastal oasis – a perfect space for entertaining or relaxing, no matter what season.

Sliding back a custom Merbau timber gate reveals an extensive vegetable and flower garden, which boarders a large granite paved entertaining area. We’ve used Corten Steel to tidy the junction between hard edges, garden beds and lawn. Continuing this element from the design used for the native front verge helps to tie the two spaces together.

We transformed the large established Umbrella tree into a stunning feature. It’s height and broad-leaf pattern provide shade on those scorching summer’s days and shelter from prevailing winter storms. The Merabu timber deck has been carefully shaped to allow the tree plenty of room for growth.

To further incorporate the grandeur of this tree into our design, we’ve added a carefully placed up-lighting – creating a spectacular feature for evening entertaining. Beautifully detailed screens help to transform this space further by adding privacy and transforming a plain block wall.
